IT’S MONDAY! WHAT ARE YOU READING?

This week I got to explore different award winning books. It was actually kind of hard to find them but they were well worth the search in the end.

Coretta Scott King Award:

My People By Langston Hughes

This short little book is about how beautiful people are and everything about them. It’s a very easy read only a couple words on each page. It’s perfect for students just picking up reading and wanting to keep reading and improving. The pictures on each page are intriguing because they are actual photographs of actual people. It’s different than most picture books because of that and because there is no color whatsoever, it’s all black and white. It’s a good change in pace for children’s books giving the genre even more differences.

Purple Belpre Award:

My Abuelita By Tony Johnston

This is a short story about the bonding relationship between a grandson and his grandmother, which he calls abuelita. It just quickly explains their routine in the morning and shows they can still have fun together no matter what they are doing. I loved how close Tony portrayed the grandson an grandmother, I think family is one of the most important things a child can have. They are the ones who shape the child the most after all.

Sibert Medal:

Black and White By Larry Dane Brimner

This book was VERY informational and very interesting hearing the two sides from different people during the Civil War. I’m not much of a history person, it tends to confuse and bore me to be honest but I found this book very interesting. It was actually pretty long and took me a while to read but it was well worth it. The Civil War is a tough subject to talk about and Brimner did a great about writing about and explaining things. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone even someone like me who is not much of a history buff.

Schneider Family Award:

Back To Front and Upside Down! By Claire Alexander

I thought this book was very adorable and great for kids who don’t like asking for help. It’s about a little dog, named Stan, who is afraid to ask his teacher for help with writing. He thinks everyone will make fun of him but in the end when he does finally ask he finds out another student needed help too. It’s a great read for students struggling with the same dilemma as Stan is. They shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help at all and this book will help remind them that they aren’t alone in their struggles.

Golden Sower Award:

Duncan the dancing Duck By Syd Hoff

This was a cute little book about a duck wanting to try something different for a change and get out of his home and travel to somewhere bigger and try for fame. In the end he wasn’t as happy as he thought he was with the big city and moves back home. I liked how it teaches us to realize what we have right now isn’t that bad and sometimes it is the best thing for us. I’d recommend it for any reader because it was pretty easy to read and understand yet fun at the same time.

Extra book:

Girlfriend Material By Melissa Kantor

Girlfriend Material was a sweet, innocent, young romance book about a girl, named Katie, who fell in love with a boy named Adam. It was a nice quick read and a short break from picture books these past three weeks. I love books about summer love and stories about love at a young age. This book was one of those you could’t put down until you knew who ended up together. It pulls at your heart strings and makes you get emotionally involved. I love the books when you develop a bond with the characters and that’s exactly what happened in this book. This novel would be great for a student in upper middle school and even some in high school. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick read as long as you can stomach butterflies.
