It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?!

Happy Monday! Only one more week until thanksgiving break and I couldn’t be anymore excited! Anyways here is all the books I read this week….

Baa Baa Black Sheep By Iza Trapani

If you enjoyed the song Baa Baa Black Sheep I guarantee you’ll love this book. All it is is the childhood song just more than I remember. It’s about a black sheep who doesn’t seem to want to share anything with the other animals. They all get mad at him for not being friendly but little do they know that he is actually planning something big for them in the end, that will make them all change their minds. The pictures were bright and you could see exactly how each of the animals felt on every page.

How Much Is That Doggie In The Window? By Iza Trapani

This is another song put into a book. It’s about a boy who wants to buy a dog that he say but doesn’t have enough money. So he plans to save money all through the week but the problem is that he keeps spending it on his family so in the end of the week he has less than what he started with. Then one day he walks past the pet store and sees that the dog is gone. The owner tells him that a family came by and bought him. I’m sure you can all figure out what happens next but I will say I thought it was a very cute book. I think it would incredibly fun to read this in class or even sing it in class.

Quiet Night By Marilyn Singer

Even though this book is titled Quiet Night, it truthfully describes a very noisy night. It is a counting book starting from one frog all the way to ten campers. It explains all the noises that each animal and human make. I’d recommend this book for early elementary students, it might make learning to count fun! There are so many different activities you could do with this book, I’m sure it would be a great one for the classroom.

It’s All About Me-ow by Hudson Talbott

Kittens are just too cute not to ignore, so when I saw this book I couldn’t resist. This book is actually my favorite for the week. It’s about an older cat teaching 3 kittens the rules and basics of being a cat. He teaches them all kinds of lessons from communi-CAT-ing to CATitude. It’s a very cute book and there is some humor in it too. Even a few inside jokes that only adults would understand. I definitely plan on using this book in my future classroom!

Pip’s Trip By Minerva Louise

This book is about a hen named Pip who tries to convince her friends that they need to sneak into the farmer’s truck and go for a ride. They all “chicken” out but Pip. Pip gets in the truck, the truck starts but it doesn’t move. Pip jumps out so excited thinking she went for a ride but in all reality she didn’t. But her friends still think she is so brave for getting in the truck at all. I’d recommend this book for any elementary student looking for a fun and easy read!

Little Blue Truck By Alice Schertle

I can picture many little boys loving this book! It’s about a little blue truck who makes friends with animals one day when it’s driving. Then a dump truck gets stuck in the mud. Blue then comes to the rescue only to get stuck too. But then all of his new friends come and help them out. The book teaches us a lesson on how nice it is to have friends, especially when you get in a sticky situation. The book was fun to read as it had a rhythm going. I’d recommend this book for anyone!

Lost Cat By Tad Hardy

Another book about cats for the week. This one happens to be about a cat who gets lost. His owner misses him very much but the man who found him can’t wait to get him out of his hair. Each sentence rhymes with the next making it fun and easy to read. I loved how the owner loved all the qualities of the cat, even the naughty ones. It can be very hard to do that sometimes but in the end I hope everyone loves their pets just as much as this owner did.

Ducks Ducks By Theodocia Swecker

This book is about a family of ducks and a mountain lion. It’s cold and rainy outside and both the mountain lion and the ducks want to find a warm dry spot to sleep. They look all over until finally they realize the best thing to do is to huddle together to stay warm. It’s a great book on teamwork and working things out together. It might be a great lesson for early elementary school ages teaching them about ways to work together.

10,000 Dresses By Marcus Ewert

This book tells the story of a boy named Bailey who dreams about pretty, glowing, completely different dresses every night. When he asks his family if he can go buy the dresses he dreams up they all say “No, you’re a boy.” But then one day he meets a girl named Laurel who happens to be sewing a dress. She explains that all her dresses come out the same and then Bailey tells her that he could help with that. This book could be a great lesson for students. It teaches them to be who they want to be and not just what everyone thinks they should be. It might be a touchy subject with some but I’d highly recommend this book.

Moose Tales By Nancy Van Laan

Moose Tales is a short chapter book with only three different chapters. They tell stories about Moose wanting to go for a walk, Beaver getting stuck under a tree, and all the animals making a snow creature together. I think this book would be perfect for any student just beginning to read chapter books because it still has pictures but yet just enough words and pages to get the reader to read more than usual.

Just Grace By Charise Mericle Harper

I thought this was a great chapter book for young readers. It describes a life of a little girl named Grace. In her class there are four different Graces so she is called Just Grace (hence the title). She hates that name and hates when people tease her about it especially the boy named Sammy Stringer. It tells the story of a normal yet different life of a little girl from learning to make faces, becoming best friends with the renter, and adventures with a cardboard cat. It keeps you wanting to read more in order to figure out what is going to happen next. This book is humorous and very entertaining to read. I hope to read the sequels to it sometime in the future!

  1. I remember seeing “10,000 Dresses” at the library but I hadn’t picked it up. Looks like I need to go back and get it! I love stories that tell kids to be themselves, and I like how the author went all the way and touched on a subject that some people don’t like. “Just Grace” sounds like a fun quirky book, would it take very long to read?

  2. The two “song in a book” books you read sound really fun. Did you read “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly”? If not, you should go check it out! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Clearly, I was most intrigued by your cat books of the week. I can’t believe I’ve walked past It’s All About Me-Ow several times this week and haven’t picked it up, but now that I have read your post I am going to go grab it right after I press send on this comment! The Lost Cat sounds really cute too. I know as a crazy cat lady I love everything about my two cats, even when they do things that drives others crazy. I’m sure if someone tried to take one of my boys home, they’d get the boot within the hour!

  4. We have a few other Iza Trapani singalong books, and they are some of my favorites from when my kiddos were babies! Also, when I took Music for the Elementary Teacher, our teacher shared how much students love singalong books–so I think they would make a really excellent addition to the classroom (especially K-1). I don’t LOVE singing in front of others, but I’ve learned that kids really don’t care!! Great list this week..thanks for sharing! 🙂

  5. I like the animal theme that you had going for the most part! I think that books about animals are just so much funnier than others. It takes a lot of imagination to see animals doing the crazy things that they do!
